Rhode Island Temporary Plates
Important Information about temporary plates and temporary registration
- We can print a temporary plate and registration for Rhode Island customers only. The online RI temp plate portal will not generate plates/reg for out of state addresses.
- The cost for issuing a temp plate and reg is $25.50. This is what the Rhode Island DMV charges us and this will be shown as a line item on the bill of sale.
- We will need your insurance company, policy number, and effective dates. Please call your insurance company before picking up the vehicle and add it to your policy so you are insured on the way home.
- Temporary plates are valid for 30 calendar days from the date on the bill of sales. Once the plate has expired we cannot issue another one.
Rhode Island customers do not need a temporary plate/registration if wishing to transfer a registration from another vehicle of the same registration type. You can use the registration and plates from your old vehicle for 30 days but must keep the original dated bill of sale and sales tax form in the vehicle. We are required to note the registration number you are transferring on the bill of sale. Oftentimes it is more convenient to purchase a temp plate/reg.
